My daughter who is in second grade has been obsessed with Chinese New Year for several years now. I would like to visit during the festivities with her this coming 2011 year. I understand it's in the late January early February neighborhood, but could you tell me specifically when? she really wants to see the parade and watch the dragon visit business's in Chinatown. also, are there any activities a second grade girl could participate in aside from just visiting Chinatown and shopping?

Chinese New Year is on 3rd Feb. 2011

Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade.

In San Francisco, the New Year Parade is usually held on Saturday night. I don't konw the exact festival schedule for 2011 but I believe the parade day will be 12th or 19th in Feb.

When you see a lion dance, try to step near dancers (or they will find your daughter). The Lion (not a real lion) comes close and bites heads of children hoping they will grow up helthy. It's a chinese tradition (may be a little scared but fun!!)

There will be a lot of local events during new year weeks. You can get further information from < http://www.sanfranciscochinatown.com/ >
