I know there are plenty of ways to get red velvet cake at local bakeries, but sometimes I want to make it at home, and not quite from scratch.

I've checked the grocery stores nearby me (in the South Beach / Mission Bay area / mid SOMA) with no luck. What grocery stores stock red velvet box mix?

edit I've checked Safeway at 4th & King, Whole Foods on 4th, Trader Joe's on 9th, and Costco on 10th.

Ah yes, I should have listed the specific stores. Added it to the entry.

I even went into the market underneath my apartment, wit no luck.. They said Red Velvet cake is popular in the south, go figure. It looks like you might have to make it your self.

This is a relatively pricey option, but the Crate & Barrel near Union Square sells a complete kit (by Barefoot Contessa) for red velvet cake and cream cheese frosting. Of course, $12 for a box that makes 12 cupcakes is still cheaper than SF's boutique cupcake bakeries.

I don't think that answers the question of where to buy mix, but it looks like they do sell red velvet cupcakes, which is also good! Thanks for your answer :)

I've seen Red Velvet cake mix at the Vons Pavillions. You can also order six packs of Duncan Hines Red Velvet Cake mix from Amazon.
