I want to ride the famed cable cars, like you see in all the cheesy souvenir shops, but I don't want to wait in line for hours or pay more than I have to. What's the best strategy for riding the cars? I think there are two different lines, but I don't know much about either one. Ideally, I'd like to know where I should buy tickets, whether I should buy them in advance, and what are some fun things to do during / after the cable car ride. |

So, cable cars are pretty simple. There are two routes: East/West on California, and North/South on Powell/Hyde. The Powell/Hyde line is by far the more touristy of the two, primarily because it services more touristy areas like Fisherman's Wharf and Powell St. Station. To avoid the line, either hop on to the cars after their first stops (Powell Station/Fisherman's Wharf for North/South) or avoid the Powell/Hyde line altogether. Be aware that during the tourist season, there will be flocks of tourists on there. If you don't stand in line, you might not be able to get on at all. My advice would be to take the California line. This is more a "commuter" line, and runs a straight path down (and up) the street. You still get all the views, and you pass right along some of Nob Hill's most prestigious addresses. But do try to ride both lines, as the North/South has a variation on Hyde, and the views of the Bay are awesome. Pricing is a flat fee for cable cars. You get on, and the conductor will eventually ask you for fare (something like $5). You can buy tickets in advance at Powell St. Station, for the same price. There are no transfers between cable cars, but hold onto your receipt in case you are asked again for it. 1
Thank you!! When you say "there are no transfers," if I get off at the end of the line, would I need a second $5 ticket to get home?
