I'm looking for ways to find races in and near San Francisco. (Info about good places to train would also be useful; these two things are probably related.) Let's use the definition that the "best" road races have impressive views or good terrain for running.

More about me specifically:

  • I've slowly jogged my way through 5Ks before, but I haven't ever run very far in training.
  • I know that concrete is very bad for your joints, but I still run on sidewalks occasionally, just because it's often convenient.
  • I don't mind traveling a bit for a race, but would not take more than a single bus or train for a regular workout.
  • I live in the city, close to downtown.

Thanks for asking -- when I reread the question, I decided it made hardly any sense, so I've rewritten it completely. I hope it's clearer now!

I'm not sure about Road races in the city, but I am sure about running in general. I used run cross country & track. Besides advice from peers and all the online info, here are some tips:

  • Stretch and warmup. ( warmed muscles are better muscles)
  • Running on concrete is a no good anytime of the week. You can use Elliptical Machines, (image) as they have very little to no impact, and gives you a good consistent work out.
  • Hikes are great for training, as they are not consistent. Having the change in terrain helps build muscles, and stamina .
