Outer Sunset and Outer Richmond are fairly suburban and have lots of parking. In terms of denser neighborhoods, I've seen lots of strollers in Noe Valley and, lately, in some pockets of South Beach / Mission Bay. All of these places have good restaurants but few (if any) bars and clubs.

For more info, SF Gate has a pretty good guide to local neighborhoods.

I agree with Sunset and Richmond, certain pockets also have actual neighborly feels that is rare in the city. Also, close proximity to GG Park and the beach make for easy simple outdoors activities with children and families.

I would say Cole Valley / Ashbury Heights would be a safe bet, even though your central, and close to haight, the neighborhood itself is very calm and quaint.

Despite its proximity to the Haight, anyone who has spent time in this small community knows Cole Valley has a distinct character all its own. "Community" is the operative word in this thin slice of San Francisco real estate, bordered on the west by Stanyan Street and the Sutro Forest, on the south by Tank Hill and on the east by Clayton Street. Residents are largely families and young professionals, though there is no trace of the snootiness that has affected other parts of the city. Most of the businesses in Cole Valley are of the mom-and-pop variety, in lieu of chain stores or franchises, and shop owners are outwardly supportive of each other

I have heard Noe Valley is the new hot spot to raise a family. Potrero Hill is also quiet and becoming more popular.

Well, if you've got the dough I would say that Sea Cliff would be an excellent place to raise little ones. China Beach is nearby, and the entire area is very residential. Oh, and you get to be neighbors with the likes of Robin Williams and Sharon Stone.

If you dive in the water near there, this is what you see:
