EveryBlock San Francisco allows you to keep tabs on your neighborhood, however you define that -- whether it's X blocks away from your address or an oddly shaped area. Their FAQ explains what the site tries to do. Its information mostly falls into these major categories:

  • Civic information: building permits, crime, restaurant inspections
  • News articles: from major media outlets to local blogs
  • Web sites: Yelp, Craigslist, Flickr

I use it by setting up an RSS feed for 8 blocks around my apartment so that I know about new restaurants, local muggings, and things like that. Seeing the nearby Flickr photos is just a fun bonus =)
