Occasionally it's worth it to pay some money for an efficient, well-guided tour. Companies might include transportation, food, guide info, or something else that makes it easier than discovering the city for yourself. There are lots of companies (Blazing Saddles, Duck Tours, etc.) that sell some kind of package.

What are the best ones? Which ones would you actually recommend to your friends and family when they visit you in San Francisco?

San Francisco Walking Tours offers free tours of city neighborhoods nearly every day. If you've got a group, you can also reserve a private tour for around $10 per person.
