Where can I go crab fishing? Are there places in the city? I would assume not, what about the Bay Area?

per this website

During one of my outings I came across a public fishing pier under the Golden Gate Bridge. There were people fishing of course, and as I began looking in people's catch buckets I came across one full of these bright red crabs. Seconds became hours as I gazed in amazement at the sight before me. I had never seen crabs outside of a tide pool or the local grocery store tank. These individuals had managed to capture a whole bucket of them, and I was determined to find out how. After setting up an observation post, not entirely different than the kinds of set ups the FBI or CIA uses, I had the basic information I needed to get started. I'm not an expert. Everything I know has been learned from experience and this page may very well provide information which is not scientifically correct. I'm a communications major, not a biochemist.

There are several good places to go for crabs in the bay area, depending on what you're after. Inside the Golden Gate, no Dungeness are legal. However anything else over 4 inches (body) is legal. You can try Berkeley pier, Muni pier (Van Ness), Torpedo Pier (Fort Point), or for Dungeness, Pacific pier. All these public piers do not require a license. Dungeness have a season, usu. Nov-summer. All the rest anytime.
