I'm looking for good activities to do in or nearby the city that are enjoyable without being an expert. Anything that's good in a group is even better. For example, bowling meets all of my criteria except for being unusual. Laser tag would be better, because it's less ubiquitous, but both are good group activities because they don't require very specialized skills.

Cupid's Gate Archery gives free instruction in the Golden Gate Park archery field on Saturdays from 11 am to 2 pm. You can rent equipment from them or bring your own.

I would say Paintball. It's not that expensive if you rent the equipment, and you really don't need any skills besides how to shot a gun and hide ;). The paintballs themselves are the most expensive cost, as least from what I remember, expect to pay $20-50 (if you want a whole box $50), as you never want to run out of ammo!!!! California is the meca for Paintball, and courses are varied.. You have speed courses, or wood courses - both are fun. This is all I could find for courses close by we used to put a flag in the middle of the course, and play "capture the flag" - really fun stuff I will try to add more courses

I highly recommend ping-pong. You dont really have to be good to have fun and you get good very fast. Theres a table in the back of Finnegans Wake on Cole. Im sure there are a few other bars with tables as well (the Tee Off used to have one and I think also Thee Park Side.) Get your own or make friends with someone who has one. You'll thank me later

I like how the first three answers we posted all involve shooting something :P
I added activities to the question, as the word "hobbies" could be confusing, ie: collecting beer cans.
