I was talking with a friend on the phone the other day and he mentioned to me that the "Church of Satan" was founded in San Francisco. He's a Midwesterner (Ohio), and very devout Catholic. He didn't have any details other than what he had heard from some of his church friends, and he was trying to urge me to leave San Francisco because it was "evil." Anybody know anything about the Church of Satan? Apparently this was a group that organized in the 1970s? Is it still around? Do we have active Satanists in San Francisco?

San Francisco has a bit over eight hundred thousand people. Does your friend really think they're all satanists? Anyway, you can read a bit about the so-called "church" on the links below. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_LaVey http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_Satan In my opinion, he called it a church to get media attention, and to goad and taunt the conservative religious people; in reality, it is simply a philosophy of life that defines itself in some ways as opposites of the failures of what they see in the modern American Christian belief. Add a flair for the theatrical, and you get a recipe for a religion. If he claimed to be a new Christian prophet and founded his own splinter branch of Christianity, nobody would bat an eye. (there are over 30 thousand branches of "Christianity" by now; see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_denominations) |

There are different versions of Satanism so this is very vague and hard to answer. Satanism is not really a communal based belief system though as far as I know. 1
maybe this should be a comment, instead of an answer, as it's not really answering the question :)
