I seem to have the worst luck with craigslist roommates. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to find a place or reliable roommates?

If you attend school, try the local posting / message boards. The advantage in this approach is that you'll likely find someone in the same situation as you (i.e, mired in academia). Beyond that, try asking your friends if they know anyone. You'd be surprised at how robust your social network (in real life!) is, and how much you can get from it.
