Why is there such a fascination with 'hella' here? I hear some people scoffing and others defending it, it seems like a arbitrary moment of contention between those who grew up in Nor Cal versus the rest of the United States. Especially when there are so many other minute differences in how people are raised here. What is everyone's opinions on this?

"Hella" is a unique verbalism endemic to the San Francisco Bay Area, and by extension, the rest of Northern California/Tahoe. An analogy would be the use of the word "wicked" in the Northeastern (especially Boston, Massachusetts) United States. People from the area naturally associate their region with the word, and develop either an affinity for, or a disposition against, it. Basic regionalism, in other words. People either like or don't like things that remind them of any specific place. Myself, I'm all about individualism and I think little linguistic quirks make speech fun. I love accents and regional diction variants, but that's just the wordsmith in me. Too many books as a kid, yeah?
