I know most parks allow pets, but there are there any specific parks for dogs? Or areas where this is designated where one can just let their puppy go and frolic in the grass?

:) I'm specifically in SF but any place in the bay area I'm sure would be helpful to other animal lovers in the area.

First off - here is a great source for parks. http://parkscan.org/parks. Second, there are a lot of dog parks in SF. I marked the off-leash in bold. I will make this answer community-wiki, that way others can keep this list up to date.

Alamo Square & The Haight

Bernal Heights

Glen Park

John McLaren Park (Southeast San Francisco /Visitacion Valley / The Portola) Type: off-leash area for dogs Size: More than 300 acres. North section of park has off-leash dog zones. Location: John F. Shelley Drive

SLIGHTLY FARTHER EAST

Cesar Chavez Park (Berkeley Marina) Type: off-leash area for dogs Size: 90 acres with designated off-leash area Location: Off Highway 80 - University Avenue exit to the Berkeley Marina

Point Isabel Regional Shoreline Park Richmond (north of Berkeley and Albany) Type: off-leash dog park Size: 21 acres of off-leash area with bay and San Francisco views, and water access for dogs. Point Isabel and surrounding mudflats and marshes are also a haven for bird watchers.

The park also has Mudpuppy's Tub & Scrub (dog wash) and Cafe for dogs and their owners. Location: Off Highway 80 - Central Avenue west to Point Isabel.
